Updates from Implementers & Standards-Related News
ILS-DI project (Karen Wetzel)*
This ILS Discovery Interfaces group currently managed by Andrew Nagy. In a 6/14/10 e-mail, he noted:
From my perspective, the goal of this group is to take existing recommendations (ILS-DI) and
standards (NCIP) to produce a working toolset for providing true interoperability between
Discovery systems and ILS systems. That being said, I feel that the current recommendation or
focus of this group is right on so far: To adopt the XC NCIPToolkit to provide a web service
interaction model between the two aforementioned systems. The NCIPToolkit currently uses the
1.0 NCIP standard which is a specification for various messages in the exchange of information.
Right now they are using 1.0, and may not understand the changes/improvements available in 2.0, and
may not be aware of the future planned changes and that continuous maintenance process. John Bodfish
is engaged, but it would make sense to have a stronger tie with NCIP.
This is an outgrowth of the DLF work; the current project goal is stated as: “This group is intended for
discussion and concrete action toward developing an infrastructure for interoperating between integrated
library systems and other systems, but primarily discovery layers such as Blacklight, VUFind, Summon,
WorldCat Local, SOPAC, Scriblio, and others. This work has been picked up by an interested group in the
Code4Lib community.” See more, including a join link to this group, on the ILS-DI Homepage: http://

Resource Sharing and then branch into the unique messages for each area.

Ask NCIP Forum & FAQ (Dhaval & John Barr)
Discussion from the last meeting about ways to make information about NCIP more readily available, and
to enable questions outside of this group to engage.
John and Dhaval have created an internet forum for discussion. NCIPnow.com. Need to register and
become a member to post. Question of how this might be different/better than the existing open
discussion list (with archives): http://www.niso.org/lists/ncipinfo/. There are currently 119 users on the
discussion list. Several members mentioned that they follow several forums and like the fact that the
messages are in a discrete area rather than being mixed with general emails.
•
Action Item: Will need to have a moderator, rules, guidelines, etc. John & Dhaval to take a first
stab at writing up some guidelines for this group to review before the group goes public.
Action Items & April Meeting Followups
Please review these in the NISO workspace and update status.
Documentation Projects
Rob has put together a document about NCIP updates and versioning. He describes the workflow that we
have agreed upon in NCIP continuous maintenance.
•
Action Item: Please review and provide feedback prior to the next call.
•
Action Item: Gail will draft a list of documentation projects and post it to the group prior to the
next call (but after ALA).
Other/New Business
