NCIP Conference Call
November 19, 2009
Present on the call
Mary Campbell - Auto-Graphics
Susan Campbell - CCLA
Rob Walsh - EnvisionWare (Maintenance Agency)
Tony OʼBrien - OCLC
Rob Gray - Polaris
Gail Wanner (Chair) - SirsiDynix
Jean Rafsnider - TLC/CARL
Scott Mayberry - VTLS
Agenda
Updates from Implementers
Wanner reported that SirsiDynix is in production with a subset of messages with CARL.
The implementation is a resource-sharing, DCB-like model using NCIP v1.01 on
Tandem-based CARL. Rafsnider indicated that TLC/CARL is working on the CARL.X
version. She also said that they have had a Library.Solution implementation in
production for some time.
Jackson reported that Auto-Graphics is testing with TLC/CARL and is close to having a
complete implementation with Library.Solution.
OʼBrien reported the OCLC is planning to implement NCIP v2.0 within the next six
months. They will support both versions of the standard.
News from the Standards Community
Single-Sign On
Walsh reported that he and Koppel are serving on the NISO Single-Sign On (SSO)
working group. Walsh is involved in a sub-group effort to deliver use cases, identify
preferred locations for login/authentication elements on web pages, and to establish
common terminology for login credentials. Anyone with ideas, concerns, or other
feedback related to these topics is welcome to submit them to Walsh, and he will make
an effort to represent those perspectives within the working group.
Wanner asked about our progress with ANSI in getting the Continuous Review process
approved. Walsh agreed to contact (Karen) Wetzel at NISO for an update. OʼBrien
indicated that he would add an item to the Discovery to Delivery Topic Committee
conference call agenda for the call to be held Monday, November 23. Wanner expressed her belief that this needs to be done soon so that we can plan effectively for
our spring meeting.
Tasks and Projects
Implementer Registry
Wanner reported that Campbell and Brown had completed their initial work on building
an NCIP implementer registry. Walsh is working to post the chart on the NCIP website.
Wanner then took the chart and created a prototype of a web form checklist that we
might use to allow implementers to report their status. She asked the group for
feedback. Gray indicated that it looked like it would be a useful tool. Jackson asked if
the sub-elements would be repeated under each element as they were under the
LookupUser message. Wanner confirmed that they would. Campbell asked how one
would know whether the implementer is an initiator or a responder. Wanner indicated
that the intent is to provide an equivalent form for responders. This one was specific to
initiators. Campbell then asked where the data collected from the form would go - a
database, for example. Wanner said that may be the next step. We would need to find
someone to collect and compile the information so that it could be queried.
The major suggestions made for improving the form are:
•Add a place to indicate version for both product and standard
•Make the date entered field automatic for input and read-only when viewed
Documentation
Getting Started with NCIP
OʼBrien reported that (John) Bodfish has not yet started the “Getting Started with NCIP”
document. He would be willing for someone else to take the task or volunteer to assist
with the efforts. Anyone interested should contact Bodfish.
Campbell said that she had sent a link for an article on managing multi-vendor RFID
implementations to Bodfish. She felt the information was applicable to other
technologies as well.
RFP Guidelines
Walsh offered to talk with (Ted) Koppel about his progress on the RFP Guidelines. In a
previous call, Koppel was planning to coordinate with Wetzel at NISO on this project.Outreach
ALA Events
Wanner asked whether we should pursue an NCIP social at ALA Midwinter. She had
been hearing from her customers that many may not be attending Midwinter. She
recommended that we not plan a social event for Midwinter but focus on doing
something at the annual meeting. The group agreed.
Wanner reported that she had spoken with (Nada) Vaughn about the LAMA/RUSA
STARS forum at ALA Midwinter. Vaughn has again invited the NCIP-IG to have a
representative on the panel.
Wanner suggested that we not discuss any sort of presentation at ALA Annual until
Wetzel would be able to participate in the dicussion.
Spring Meeting
Gray proposed April 27-29 as the dates for a spring meeting in Syracuse, NY. Polaris
will serve as the host for the meeting. They are looking at using the Craftsman Inn
(http://craftsmaninn.com) as the site for the meeting. It is close to restaurants and it has
a hotel as part of the conference facility. He will send more details to the group via the
list.
Next Call
Wanner asked the group whether the third Thursday of each month at 1 pm Eastern
continues to be an acceptable time. No one objected.
